Whether you’re paying with a smartphone, smartwatch, or NFC-enabled card, the goal is simple: Convenience. That’s the appeal of contactless payments.
NFC technology only works at very short distances, and digital wallets add tokenization for extra protection. Still, attackers are getting creative. A new Android malware called SuperCard X can hijack a device and turn it into a “relay point” that captures NFC and card data.
To stay protected, device security matters. These attacks often begin with smishing or vishing messages, usually pretending to be from your bank. Avoid answering any unsolicited “urgent” financial messages, and monitor your transactions closely and regularly. Lost or stolen tap cards can also be used for small purchases, so you need to act fact if one goes missing.
Convenience is great, but only when it’s paired with vigilance!
